El aparato, bautizado DuplicAR, sirve para equipos que ya están en uso y tiene el objetivo de ayudar a vivir a personas en situación crítica, dado que permite duplicar la cantidad de personas conectadas a respiradores.
Un equipo de médicos y veterinarios de la Universidad Nacional de La Plata diseñó y testeó un sistema de adaptadores para ventilar de manera independiente y en simultáneo a dos pacientes con un mismo respirador.
«El objetivo es disponer de una herramienta más que permita evitar la crisis del sistema sanitario y disminuir el impacto del Covid-19 durante el pico de infectados», informó la universidad en un comunicado.
Ignacio Lugones, inventor y líder del proyecto, expresó que «es un seguro de vida más que permite darle algunas horas de ventilación a un paciente que no tenía ninguna chance, además de ser una solución simple, barata y rápida».
«Lo que diseñamos fue un sistema de adaptadores que permiten ventilar en forma independiente y en simultáneo a dos pacientes con un mismo respirador», contó, y detalló que si un paciente necesita parámetros de ventilación más altos (por ser de mayor tamaño o por tener peor funcionamiento de sus pulmones) puede recibirlos en forma independiente de lo que necesita el otro.
«Esto quiere decir que en caso de que necesite mayor cantidad de aire inspirado o determinados parámetros para la ventilación se los puede colocar de forma independiente de lo que recibe el otro paciente conectado», explicó Lugones.
El respirador artificial es un aparato con pequeñas ruedas que tiene un monitor, una boca por la cual sale el aire y otra por la que vuelve el aire del mismo paciente.
Nuestro dispositivo tiene una parte para la boca de la que sale el aire del respirador, llamada puerto inspiratorio y otra por la cual regresa que es el puerto espiratorio. El dispositivo se conecta a estos puertos del respirador, y dispone de controladores que regulan en forma independiente la ventilación de los dos individuos», dijo el especialista.
«El respirador sigue cumpliendo la misma función de siempre, la diferencia es que con este desarrollo le agregamos más controladores, que permiten regular en forma independiente a dos pacientes», agregó el médico.
En la Facultad de Ciencias Veterinarias se realizaron los testeos en modelos biológicos, antes de que pueda ser utilizado en humanos, según informó la Universidad.
Actualmente, el proyecto está gestionando las aprobaciones y habilitaciones correspondientes con el apoyo de la Cámara de Instituciones de Diagnóstico Médico (Cadime) mientras se tramita un subsidio con el Fondo Nacional de Desarrollo Productivo (Fondep) del Ministerio de Desarrollo Productivo para avanzar en el desarrollo y comenzar la producción.
«Ojala nunca lleguemos a necesitar un dispositivo DuplicAR durante la pandemia que estamos viviendo, pero si la situación es extrema y se llega a ese punto, sería ideal tenerlo para poder mantener con vida a dos pacientes mientras se busca una solución más definitiva, en lugar de que el médico tenga que tomar la difícil decisión de quien vive y quien muere», finalizó el médico.
